Targa Catalunya, 3 Circuits, One PassionOne of the stellar events to be celebrated at Spirit of Montjuic on Saturday April 21st is the “Targa Catalunya, Three Circuits, One Passion”, an innovative rally with forty exceptionally showy vehicles of historic quality racing on a triangular route which joins the circuits which have put the competitions and racing itself in this country on the map: Montjuïc, Sitges-Terramar and Circuit de Catalunya. Its name is reminiscent of the Targa Florio of Sicily race, considered to be the oldest in the world. The Targa Catalunya will be reserved for a select group of classic vehicles which will register for the event, and which are outstanding for their history, beauty, and degree of preservation. The cars take off from the starting line of the old Montjuic circuit, following a route which takes them to the Terramar motor racing track in Sitges, and they finish their journey in the Circuit of Catalunya. This challenge was born of the desire to commemorate something unique. In no other part of the world does there exist a territory like this one in Catalunya, where three international circuits were built and achieved greatness throughout a century. They have influenced the outcome of the history of competitions and of racing itself. In addition to many automobile and motorcycle races in their purest form, the long- standing urban circuit of Montjuic hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Spain during 1969, 1971 (Jackie Stewart won both years with Matra-Ford and Tyrrell-Ford, respectively), 1973(Emerson Fittipaldi with Lotus Ford)and the troubled edition of 1975 (which Jochen Mass won with McLaren-Ford).The race track of Terramar (Sant Pere de Ribes), the second permanent circuit of Europe, and one of the joys of Spanish race car driving, was inaugurated in early 1923 amongst great expectation. It is nearly 2 kilometres long and its steep banks assure good lateral support in the two large curves at each end. Despite the fact that it is now in disuse, it remains almost intact thanks to its robust cement construction. And to finish, there is the Circuit of Catalunya, the latest modern installation, with 20 years of history hosting the Grand Prix of F-1 and that of motorcycles. Here many of the greats of the past and present have achieved unforgettable feats in both specialities.
